University of Kentucky Head Coach Rachel Lawson Interview

Below is an interview that University of Kentucky Head Coach Rachel Lawson recently done with us.

What would you say is the main thing that you brought to the Kentucky softball program that has helped to turn it around and create a winning tradition?

(Coach Lawson)-The biggest thing with our program is that we have great people around it. From the players to the support staff to our wonderful AD, Mitch Barnhart – the people at Kentucky have been what has made us successful.

You really had great pitching last year with Kelsey Nunley and Meagan Prince. Prince is back but losing Nunley to graduation who do you see stepping up to compliment Meagan Prince this season on the mound?

(Coach Lawson)-Shannon Smith and Erin Rethlake are the two returning pitchers that we will be relying on for this upcoming season to compliment Meagan in the circle. One of the things that is very important in order to win in the postseason is having a deep pitching rotation.

What are your thoughts on the make up of this years team?

(Coach Lawson)-We lost a lot of seniors last year, so we are obviously going to be a bit younger in some spots. We have a lot of great returning players like Abbey Cheek, Jenny Schaper and Katie Reed who are returning freshman who have improved a lot over the offseason and we will be relying on them this year.

If you could change one thing about college softball what would it be?

(Coach Lawson)-The one thing I would change about college softball is early recruiting.

What is the most important thing you hope the players you coach at Kentucky take away with them when they graduate and start their post college life?

(Coach Lawson)-A degree. They come to college to get a degree, and this program has continually been one of the highest-excelling teams in the classroom at Kentucky, and that’s the most valuable thing that they can walk out of our program with.
