Florida State takes 2018 WCWS title in two games.
In game two of the 2018 WCWS final series Florida State found themselves in a new position not playing to stave off elimination. Win the game and they would be the 2018 champions but even if they lost they’d still live to play another day.
Taking the mound for the teams was, Meghan King for FSU and Taran Alvelo for Washington. It didn’t take long for the wheels to come off for FSU as they couldn’t do anything right in the first inning and before the dust settled the Huskies were up 3-0. But in the bottom of the inning after Jessie Warren lead off the inning with a single to get on base Alvelo got two strikeouts but then FSU’s catcher Anna Shelnutt got a home run to close the gap to 3-2 giving life to FSU.
To start the second FSU seemed to calm down and shake off their first inning bad start with Meghan King striking out the first two Washington batters and getting a ground ball for the third out of the inning. It was Washington’s turn in the bottom of the second to get the jitters and FSU scored three runs thanks to some not clean fielding and took a 5-3 lead.
Neither team scored in the third inning. In the top of the fourth it looked like Washington might get a rally going with bases loaded and two outs but FSU got the third out on a ground ball holding Washington scoreless. In the bottom FSU got a three run home run from Elizabeth Mason to take a 7-3 lead. That was enough for Washington head coach Heather Tarr who decided to pull Alvelo and brought in Gabbie Plain with one out in the inning. Jessie Warren welcomed her to the game by taking a pitch over the center field wall for a solo home run taking the score to 8-3. The inning ended with that score.
That 8-3 score held up as Florida State, after facing 6 elimination games in the tournament, won and got the first ever softball championship title for both the school and the ACC.
In closing when this year’s tournament got started Florida State was not one of the favorites and several times played to avoid being eliminated from the tourney. This was a team that played lose and was having fun and really believed in each other and I think that was a big part of what helped Florida State to win this Championship. A big congratulations to them for a job well done.
