Last year the Panthers won their first ever ACC Coastal Division Championship. Luckily for them they return 15 players this season from that championship team. Those returning players include; seniors Sarah Dawson, Marissa DeMatteo, Gabrielle Fredericks, Olivia Gray, Taylor Myers, Taylor Rahach, Alexis Solak and Nava Susi, juniors Alexee Haynes, Brittany Knight, Kaitlyn Kruger and Connor McGaffic and sophomores Morgan Batesole, Brie Horrell and Hunter Levesque. The team will also have some fresh faces on this years team including freshmen Hannah Bach, Abby Edwards, Katlyn Pavlick and Sarah Seamans. With all that returning talent and some new faces Pitt should be setup to have a good season.
One missing face from this years team will be head coach Holly Aprile who after leaving Pitt to coach for the Louisville Cardinals was replaced by Jodi Hermanek who prior to taking the Pitt coaching job had been head coach at Ohio University. She has 397 career wins and 14 years of NCAA Division 1 head coaching experience including the last 10 at OU. Hermanek becomes just the third head softball coach at Pitt.
It was a great season last year with Pitt ending with a record of 33-18-1 going 16-6 in the ACC including being ACC Coastal Division Championship and just one out from winning the ACC championship over eventual 2018 WCWS champions Florida State. But it all ended abruptly when the teams where announced for the playoffs and Pitt was left on the outside looking in with no bid given to them.
With the big number of returning players and a chip on their shoulders from being left out of last year’s playoff party look for Pitt to come out swinging and be sure to make it into this years playoffs.
