‘The Saturate’ EP By House Hounds

Forming in late 2013 through a musician classified ad, the boys set out working on material after connecting on the love of shared influences. After a couple of years of gigging and rehearsing, a few singles, radio interviews and airplay, the band started working on their debut EP Saturate.

Written, recorded and self produced over the course of 6 months, the EP was handed to multi-award winning producer Magoo for mixing duties and mastered by Matthew Gray.

“The EP was recorded over the course of 6 months after long nights and days of pre-production and demoing. All songs were written around the same time frame except the first track ‘Bird’ which was written two years prior,” says
member Keelan Callaghan on the process of writing the EP.

On display on the EP are 70s influenced vintage synths, overdriven guitar layers and creamy fuzz leads, reminiscent of 90s era alt-rock records and a modern take on a vintage compressed drum sound, are all features of the new release.

Lead single ‘Karamel’, layers 70s influenced vintage synth sounds with a mono recorded drum track. The song’s uniquely structured arrangement is standout.

“The EP was named “Saturate” as an adjective to describe the overall sound of the EP. Having multiple layers of guitars and the use of effects and atmosphere… to me the songs sounded “saturated” in color, tying them together.

Lyrically the songs are about life events that I have experienced over the past 2 years,” says Keelan.

The Saturate EP by HOUSE HOUNDS will be released 23rd of June 2017.

One More Day Video:

“”One More Day” is without a doubt one of the strongest tracks on “Elevation” and a song we are very proud of. It was one of those songs that was hanging loose for a long time in the writing process before we came up with the final touches, like the first verse, vocals and the melody of the chorus. It suddenly just turned to magic. Since then it has been one of my personal favorites.” said guitarist and co founder of the band Kenny Boufadene.

On getting over 2 million streams, front woman Cat Fey sent a very personal message “To all our fans: Thank you all for your support, for buying our music and merchandise, for sharing us with your friends. Thanks also for putting us in playlists, using our music in your own videos on youtube and all the other ways people have discovered and shared our music – we are the proof that this is how modern bands can make it without the backing of a major label, instead building slowly and for the long term!”

We Are The Catalyst are currently working on a new album and are making plans to tour internationally.

Deer Tick Announces First New Music in Four Years

For the first time in four years the acclaimed and beloved band Deer Tick announce the September 15 release of a long-awaited new album…actually, two. Never a group to stand by conventional protocol, the celebrated Providence, RI quartet will release two separate albums of original material, Deer Tick Vol. 1 and Deer Tick Vol. 2 (Partisan Records), recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis, TN. The two albums complement each other yet reflect completely contrasting styles, both of which accurately represent the two distinctive musical personalities of Deer Tick – quiet and thoughtful / loud and raucous.

Deer Tick Vol. 1 showcases the folk-driven, roots/rock style with right amount of grit, that Deer Tick is known for. Lead singer/ songwriter John McCauley is a masterful introspective and observational songwriter, who documents inner struggles and external conflicts with a perfect balance of heartfelt sincerity and wry wit. The opening track “Sea of Clouds” encompasses all of what brought so many fans to Deer Tick in the first place, and also what kept them there.

Guitarist Ian O’Neil’s “Hope is Big” and drummer Dennis Ryan’s “Me & My Man” expand on the group’s already dynamic range.

On Deer Tick Vol. 2, the band turns it up and lets it fly with an injection of punk-inspired garage rock at it’s finest. Clever lyrics, infectious hooks and captivating melodies pack Vol. 2 with bassist Christopher Ryan skillfully laying it down with authority and attitude. The propulsion of opener “Don’t Hurt”, edgy pop of “Jumpstarting” and rowdy punk of “It’s a Whale” reveal that there was an obvious Jekyll & Hyde approach to recording Vol. 1 & Vol. 2. Vol. 2 closes with boisterous “Mr. Nothing Gets Worse”, with all three singers taking a verse on a song that would have made The Replacements proud.

Deer Tick defines the term outlier. Their ever-evolving style has never been claimed by any one scene or genre. They encompass key elements of indie-rock, country, punk, pop, Americana, folk and so much more, which is what makes it difficult to nail them down. With Deer Tick Vol. 1 and Deer Tick Vol. 2, the question really is, why would anyone want to?

Alexa Dark Debut EP Empty Drinks/Empty Hearts

Watch Alexa Dark – “Empty Drinks”

Alexa Dark debuts her new single and music video, “Empty Drinks,” via She Shreds. She Shreds praised the track and accompanying video, stating, “With its biting lyrics, apathetic mood, and crunchy guitars, the record’s title track recalls some of the best 90s alt-rock anthems.” The video’s live element highlights both the grit and the glamour of Alexa Dark’s musical style and look.

Raised between Spain, London and Germany, now based in New York City and London, the songs are inspired by Alexa Dark’s transient lifestyle. The songs were written in bedrooms, planes, between drinks outside East London
clubs during early morning hours and on the concrete of various metropolitan cities. Conceived in heartbreak, in transit and from boundless nostalgia, these tracks intertwine cultural and personal narratives, influenced by the Spanish singer songwriters played in her childhood kitchen, in addition to female rock legends such as Patti Smith, Debbie Harry and Kim Gordon.

Empty Drinks/Empty Hearts is a collection of songs cultivated in the brief moment when the party is over, when the sobriety comes just before the morning does. “Blur” is one of the first songs Alexa wrote and has evolved to cater to many different relationships and situations throughout her life. It’s a “f*** it” anthem, of sorts, but still portrays vulnerability, baring her bones. “Nothing More” is an “anti-love” song, about loving but in an untraditional sense.

Referring to the EP’s title, “Empty Drinks” is a party anthem that encapsulates the sober realization and reflection on the emptiness felt at the end of the night.

Dan Wilson Announces New Album Re-Covered out August 4th

New Record Finds Wilson Reinterpreting Songs from his Storied Career as an In-Demand Songwriter

On August 4, Dan Wilson will return with Re-Covered, a unique album that finds the Grammy-winning songwriter reinterpreting songs from his storied career that he wrote for and with other artists. The album, which marks his third
solo studio release, is now available for pre-order on iTunes and Pledge Music and includes instant downloads of the first two singles: “Someone Like You” ft. Kronos Quartet, originally written with Adele, and “Home,” which was written with Dierks Bentley.

The album was announced in a conversation with Zane Lowe on his Beats 1 Radio show, where he premiered “Someone Like You” ft. Kronos Quartet. Stream the song and listen to the interview via Apple Music:

Salon premiered the video for “Someone Like You” ft. Kronos Quartet which features illustrations by Wilson himself.

Annie Zaleski interviewed Wilson about the forthcoming project and said, “On this version, the Kronos Quartet adds majestic shading to sparse acoustic guitar and Wilson’s weary vocal delivery; the latter element especially captures the original song’s combination of aching resignation and emotional fortitude.”

Rolling Stone Country premiered “Home,” which was written with Dierks Bentley and Brett Beavers and went on to hit #1 on the Country radio chart. Rolling Stone’s Jon Freeman said, “With his interpretation, Wilson gives the tune a rock makeover complete with throbbing bass, pounding toms and white-hot eruptions of electric guitar that lend it a sense of urgency and anxiety familiar to Donald Trump’s America.”

Since his days in seminal ‘90s rock band Semisonic, Wilson has been an in-demand songwriter, producer and arranger for some of the biggest acts in pop and rock music like Phantogram, Weezer, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Halsey and My Morning Jacket. For his latest 13-track album, Wilson has taken songs he’s co-written with other artists and made them his own – his own arrangements, his voice, his guitar. The result is an eclectic spin on some of the biggest songs in pop music over the last 15 years as well as some gems that never quite made it big.

“I’m hoping there are some songs on the record that everyone will recognize and think of as part of the landscape,” he says. “But then there are other songs that maybe people haven’t heard at all or they’ve only heard in passing.”

Most of the songs on the album were recorded live and mixed in an intensive week-long session at United Studios in Los Angeles, with longtime collaborators Mike Viola producing and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Pete Thomas on drums. Wilson credits Thomas, best known for his decades of work with Elvis Costello, with being central to the crafting of the arrangements.

Front and center on Re-Covered are two of Wilson’s most important and best known collaborations. Adele’s “Someone Like You” and the Dixie Chicks’ “Not Ready to Make Nice” became massive global hits – both commercial and critical success stories that ended up becoming career-defining numbers for those artists. The album also features “When The Stars Come Out” (Chris Stapleton), “Treacherous” (Taylor Swift), and “You and I” (John Legend).

One last song, written solo, completes the tale. “‘Closing Time’ isn’t a co-write,” Wilson points out. “I wrote it for my band Semisonic, so it breaks the rule of the album a bit. But it’s such an important part of the story I felt like I couldn’t leave it off the record.” The Grammy-nominated song reached #1 on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks chart, and is frequently cited as a defining track of the late 90s.

“In Semisonic, I was a songwriter who happened to have a rock band,” he says. “And it was something very conscious in my mind. I thought of myself as a writer first, and then a performer or a guitarist.”

“I had this exalted vision of what a songwriter was – someone who went into battle with only a bow and arrow, because they were just working on words and melody,” he adds. “I thought that was heroic.”

Wilson will tour in support of Re-Covered this fall, with additional tour dates to be announced in the coming months.

Track list:

1) All Will Be Well (Gabe Dixon)
2) Home (Dierks Bentley)
3) You an I (John Legend)
4) Someone Like You ft. Kronos Quartet (Adele)
5) Never Meant To Love You (Cory Chisel)
6) Not Ready To Make Nice (Dixie Chicks)

Roya Share Self-Titled LP On The 405

Roya have shared their debut self-titled LP on The 405. When talking about the LP, lead singer Rahill Jamalifard describes it as, “A scrambler of post punk jangles, with dark undertones and somber lyrics, an ode to touchy subjects.”. Prior to the LP stream the band released three singles, “Scum Rise”, “A Sickness”, and “End Times”. The band will be celebrating the release of their debut LP at Brooklyn Bazaar on 6/16. Roya’s debut self-titled album comes out June 2nd via Burger Records.

Roya, the poetic persian name of a little girl means an ominous dream, a mind trip, a fantasy. Such was the vision lead singer Rahill Jamalifard first had when hatching the idea for the band. A moody and seductive tone set against a primitive and surreal soundscape. Lending its voice to somber echoes and jangles of post punk and psychedelia. How often we wander to the uncomfortable depths of our darker minds, where unanswered questions live, where they stay carefully tucked away, still existing, unaddressed. In Roya, the exploration begins, confronting the fears and realities we struggle with. The mediocrity of life, complacency, death and its undoings, life and its great fragility, Roya invades the minds and hearts of its listeners greeting them with unwavering emotion.

The bands early formation consisting of singer Rahill Jamalifard, guitarist Jay Heislemann and drummer Hamish Kilgour set the foundation for Roya’s deliberately minimal sound. Kilgour, notable as a founding member of New Zealand’s seminal post punk band The Clean, plays shambolic and primitive driving drumbeats that add layers of depth and texture to his boldness. Heislmann’s guitar spills over Kilgour’s rhythmic web with deconstructed eastern surf riffs dripping wet with noisy undertones. This melodically demented outfit cradle Jamalifard’s stark and naked vocals that paint over each chorus with grief-stricken and doleful lyrics that are raw but gentle in delivery.

Joined later by contributing song writer and guitarist Christian Sawyer, whose presence was brief but significant, the band began to record their self titled debut record at the now defunct Death By Audio recording studio. Joining them during this time was bassist Alix Brown, whose spirited gusto added attitude and swagger with her driving grooves. In its current formation Roya is a five piece ensemble with Tyler Love on rhythm guitar and mellotron and Lyla Vander on drums. Their debut record is set to be released by Burger Records in June 2017.
